Setting Up Percentage-Based Gradebook
You can weight final grades based on assignment groups. Selecting this option assigns a weight to each assignment group, not the assignments themselves. Within each assignment group, a percentage is calculated by dividing the total points a student has earned by the total points possible for all assignments in that group. Note: If your assessment items within an assignment group have different maximum point values, the weight is adjusted based on the amount of points.
Below is an example of Percentage-Based Assignment Groups:
Lab Related Work: 30%
• Lab quiz: 20 points
• Lab 1: 20 points
• Lab 2: 20 points
• Lab 3: 20 points
Discussions: 10%
• Week 1 Discussion: 10 points
• Week 2 Discussion: 10 points
• Week 3 Discussion: 10 points
Quizzes: 20%
• Quiz 1: 10 points
• Quiz 2: 10 points
• Quiz 3: 10 points
Midterm: 15%
• Midterm: 65 points
Final Exam: 25%
• Final Exam: 100 points
Adding Assignment Groups
Using Assignment Groups allows you to organize the assignment items in your course.
Below is an example of five Weighted Assignment Groups, along with the respective assignment items listed in point value under each category:
To create the list shown in the above image, click on the +Group button (shown in the below image) for each assignment group or category.
Access Your Gradebook
The Assignments area is the back-end of your gradebook. Each assessment (i.e. graded quizzes, assignments, discussions) you add to your course is what builds your gradebook. We recommend selecting the Assignments link from your course navigation bar to review the set-up of the grades in your course.
Adding the Assignment Groups Weight
To add Assignment Groups Weight to your course, navigate to your course Assignments page from your course navigation bar, click on the menu icon located to the far right of your screen to expand the menu items, then select Assignment Groups Weights.
See example image below:
The percentage weights you specify will determine how MyCanvas calculates the final grade for your course. Click Save.

Optional Adding Rules
Once your assignments have been arranged into their assignment groups, you can create rules for the entire assignment group. Assignment group rules determine how MyCanvas handles any exceptions you want to create for grade calculations. Assignment groups can be weighted or unweighted.
Additionally, you can easily move or reorder assignment items within their groups or to another group.
Tips and Tricks
You can verify your gradebook accuracy using the below steps:
• Go to “Home” and “Student View”. This adds a Test Student to your course under “Grades”
• “Leave Student View”
• Using your teacher view, go to “Grades” and for the Test Student, add the maximum points possible for every assignment.
• Under the “Total” column, the Test Student should have the maximum percentage possible
If a student misses an assignment, set up the Late Policies in your Gradebook Settings, to automatically enter a zero (0) for your course, or manually input a 0 for the student(s) in the appropriate column(s).
